SHORT GAME · DRILL GUIDE
Wedge Matrix
A wizard that finds your stock carry for every wedge at knee-high, hip-high and full swings, so you know which swing to hit from any distance.
Free in your browser. Also on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch.

WHY IT WORKS
The problem, and the fix
Most golfers know their full-swing wedge numbers but guess at everything in between, so the in-between shots, too long for a chip and too short for a full swing, come up short or fly the green.
The goal: Build a table of carries, one per club and swing length, each from enough balls to trust: the app stops a swing as soon as its carries agree, and leaves out the odd bad one.
Without a carry for each club and swing, every in-between distance is a feel shot.
How it works
Five steps from opening the drill to your first logged result.
- 1Pick the wedges you want to measure: pitching, gap and sand wedge to start, or by loft (46° to 60°), or add your own.
- 2If you’ve measured some before, choose to fill in only what’s missing, refresh them all, or start new.
- 3Each wedge gets three swings: knee high, hip high and full. Hit one ball at a time with the club and swing on screen, set the carry to your launch monitor’s or rangefinder’s number and log it. The carry starts at a cautious estimate, then at your last ball’s carry. Only a ball that’s plainly a chunk or a thin, far from all the rest, is left out on its own: ordinary spread always counts.
- 4Watch your matrix fill in as you go: each swing shows your average and its likely range, its color turning from red to green as it gets closer to done. After at least 3 balls it moves on once it’s dialed in, or after 10 balls (change it in Settings), keeping your best guess.
- 5Stop whenever you like: the swings you’ve done are saved, and next time you can carry on with the rest.
SEE IT IN ACTION
On iPad, iPhone and the web
Wedge Matrix looks the same everywhere: in your browser on a phone, a tablet or a computer, and in the iPhone and iPad app.

Coaching tips
About 5 minutes a club · 3 to 10 balls each swing. Finish whenever you like: a session saves itself from the first reps.
Hit 100 balls measuring your wedges. Every badge is a coin on the drill’s Progress page.
No phone? Print the practice sheet. For each wedge and swing, add up the carries marked Yes and divide by how many there are: that’s its stock carry. Write the nine in the notes.
Questions
What do I need?
Wedges + balls, a launch monitor or a rangefinder.
How long is a session?
About 5 minutes a club · 3 to 10 balls each swing.
How do I score it on the practice sheet?
For each wedge and swing, add up the carries marked Yes and divide by how many there are: that’s its stock carry. Write the nine in the notes.
Which badges can I earn?
4: First carry, 100 balls, Full matrix and All dialed in. Each one lights up on the drill’s Progress page.
Can I use it hands-free?
Yes. Turn on Hands-free in the drill and say each result out loud, and “undo” or “finish”. It works in browsers with speech recognition, such as Chrome and Safari, and in the iPhone and iPad app. You can always tap instead.
Do I need an account?
No. Practice as a guest and your sessions stay on that device. Sign in with Apple, Google or email to keep them in your account, on the web and in the iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch app.
